In June
of 2001, Henderson became only the fourth headmaster at Oak Hill Academy
since the school’s inception in 1966. During his first year, OHA increased
the number of faculty members, honors classes, and student enrollment. His
priority at Oak Hill has been developing an annual campaign to provide money
for school improvements above and beyond what tuition alone could finance.
The campaign provided funds for 60 new computers, a teacher pay raise, and
various improvements to the physical plant in its first year.
Since 2002, the campaign has
funded a renovation of the gym, an indoor athletic facility, new roof on
most of the buildings, updated textbooks in the elementary, middle and high
schools and annual teacher pay raises.
Henderson spearheaded a drive
to implement more honors and AP classes into the Oak Hill curriculum, adding
honors and AP math and science in the last five years.
In 2006, Oak Hill has one
National Merit semifinalist, Wesley Rice, and eight Mississippi Eminent
Scholars.
Henderson came to Oak Hill in
June of 2001 after spending 10 years in various positions at Pillow Academy
in Greenwood, MS. Henderson began as a baseball and junior high football
coach. He later served Pillow as computer teacher, middle school principal
and Dean of Students. Henderson was 198-88 in 10 seasons as the Mustang
baseball coach. The team won two district titles, four north state titles
and one state championship during those 10 seasons.
A Greenwood native, Henderson graduated from Greenwood High School in
1980. He attended Mississippi Delta Community College in Moorhead before
transferring to Delta State University in 1983. He earned a business degree
at DSU in the summer of 1984. Henderson returned to Delta State in 1995
where he took classes for certification in computer science and then earned
a master's degree in education in social sciences and sociology. In 2001, he
completed additional work in education for certification in school
administration.
Henderson, 44, has one son, Cal, a freshman at EMCC.
