Oak Hill Academy "Education should be the process of helping everyone to discover his uniqueness, to teach him how to develop that uniqueness, and then to show him how to share it because that's the only reason for having anything." --Leo Buscaglia

ElementaryInformation Attendance: In order for your child to get the most out of Kindergarten and Elementary, regular attendance is imperative. We know that young children will be ill and have to miss from time-to-time, and we will work with you on these occasions. However, we encourage you to see that your child attends unless he or she is ill. School Schedule: At the beginning of each school year, your child will receive a copy of the Oak Hill Academy Handbook. This handbook will contain a wide variety of information for your use including a school calendar for the year. Kindergarten and Elementary classes will begin at 8:10 a.m. and end at 2:55 p.m. Monday - Friday. You are requested to pick up your child no later than 3:10 p.m. each day. Snacks: Each child will need to bring a snack for the afternoon recess or they may purchase a snack from the elementary building. Lunch: Lunches are available for purchase in the cafeteria. Students who wish to bring lunches may do so. All students will eat together in the cafeteria. You may purchase a meal ticket for the week, and please make checks out to Valley Foods. Dress Code: No dress code has been set for Kindergarten students. We suggest that they wear washable play clothes and that these clothes be comfortable and appropriate for weather conditions. Those students in Grades 1 - 5, please read the Parent/Student Handbook 2007-2008, page 29, for the dress code. Conferences and Grading: Conferences concerning your child are welcome at any time, and they may be initiated by the parents or the teachers. If you would like a conference, please call the Elementary Principal's office for a date and time. If the teacher feels a conference is needed then she will contact the parents. If we are to be successful, parents and teachers must work closely together. Homeroom Mothers: At the beginning of the school year, mothers from each kindergarten and elementary class will be asked to serve as Homeroom Mothers. Homeroom Mothers will organize parties, but every mother will be asked to participate. Birthdays: Birthdays are very special days to our elementary students, especially kindergartners, and we want to help make it a day to remember. Parents may send cakes, cupcakes, ice cream or other appropriate treats for your child, but they must be sent to the office the day of. Medication: Your child's health is of utmost importance to us and we will cooperate with you in the administration of medication if you wish us to do so. Prior to the dispensation of medication, however, we must have your written permission and clearly stated instructions designating dosage to be given and the time (s) medication is to be dispensed. All children will be required to go outside on pretty days unless the teacher has a note from the parent (s) requesting that the child be kept in for health reasons. Preparing for School: It is very important that a child feels good and positive about school and the things that he is doing at school. The parent is a key player here and can do more than anyone else to help create this positive feeling. Talk about school and assure him that he will like school. A visit or two to school before school starts will help to make it a more familiar place. Explain that school is a place where he will work and play and that learning can be fun. Do not tell him how much you will miss him but how proud you are that he is going to school. Be assured that our teachers will work closely with you and your child during the transition period. Early Dismissal: Students will be in class from 8:10 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. unless parents request early dismissal. If you plan to take your child out of school early or you plan to have someone else pick your child up prior to the regular dismissal time, you are requested to contact the Elementary Principal's office, and he or she will make appropriate arrangements. D.A.R.E Graduation February 7: Oak Hill Academy's 5th graders will be the first class to successfully complete the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) program. Graduation is set for Feb. 7 at 8:30 a.m. in the gym. Mississippi Attorney General Jim hood is the scheduled speaker. The program is under the direction of West Point Police Sgt. Zate McGee.
