Scholarship Opportunities

¤¤¤  We are always looking for new scholarships.  If you know of any, please let us know!  The following scholarships are our newest additions.  Please see Mrs. Dawkins or Mr. Anderson for more information. ¤¤¤

¤    John C. Stennis Scholarships in Political Science

MSU offers a $2,000 a year scholarship (for four years) to graduating seniors who have a high school average of B or better and are of good character.  Students must major in political science and maintain a B average with a course load of 15 hours.  Interested students need to complete an application along with two letters of reference and a seven semester transcript by  Please see either counselor for an application or call 325-2224 for more information.

¤    2007 Holocaust Remembrance Project

Essay contest for high school students. Beginning in September, check the webpage for the topic for 2008. Requires an essay of no more then 1,200 words. $2,500-$10,000 in scholarship awards.                          www.holocaust.hklaw.com

¤    Scholastic Scholarship Contest

Entrants must be high school juniors or seniors. You must compose a 500-word essay that describes an event or experience that had a positive influence on the way that you approach financial management. Outline the most helpful thing you learned and describe how it led to the development of specific skills. Two grand prize winners will each receive $15,000, five second-prize winners will each receive $1,500, and ten third-prize winners will each receive $200.  See either counselor for the application and more information or go to www.scholastic.com/collegesuccess.

¤    Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Scholarship

FCA is offering two $150 scholarships for qualified nominees (one boy and one girl).  Applicants must be current seniors at Oak Hill Academy, members of FCA, and must have a recommendation letter from his or her pastor.  See Coach Brad Cox for more information about this scholarship or about how to become a member of FCA.

¤    Horatio Alger Association Scholarship

Offered to students who have critical financial need, involvement in co-curricular/community activities, and a GPA of 2.0 or higher.  Also, you must have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, commitment to pursue a college education, and a desire to contribute to society.  Please see either counselor for more details.

¤    Best Buy Scholarship

Attention!!  Students with great  hearts. . . . Best Buy is offering a scholarship for high school seniors with good grades and outstanding community service.  To apply, visit www.bestbuy.com/scholarships

¤    2007 Nissan Scholarship

Nissan is offering a scholarship to a high school senior who meets the following criteria:  Must have a GPA of 2.5+, ACT of 20+, demonstrates financial need, and has leadership abilities/extracurricular activities.  The student must be applying to a Mississippi school and also submit a FAFSA form.  In addition, the student is to submit a signed 200-word essay on the topic, "How do my plans for the future and my college major support the automotive industry in Mississippi?"  If awarded the scholarship, the student will receive full tuition, payment of required fees, and a book allowance.

¤    National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors-Golden Triangle Scholarships

NAIFA will offer five $2,000 education scholarships for high school graduates in Mississippi. Student requirements:  must be a graduating senior, attending an in-state college/university, have a written recommendation from teacher or counselor, and must have a "B" average or score a minimum of 25 on the ACT.  In addition to the requirements, the applicant must write an essay.  If you are interested in applying, please see one of the counselors for an application.

¤    Who's Who Among American High School Students Scholarships

The Foundation will provide over $100,000 in scholarships.  Any high school students who have taken the SAT or ACT may applyA $4.00 processing fee is required.  If you are interested, please see one of the counselors for an application. 

¤    USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships

$1500 awards to eligible students with financial need.                www.usafunds.org

 ¤    Padgett Scholarship Program

Essay competition for graduating high school seniors who are dependents of small business owners. $500-$2000 awards. Go to www.smallbizpros.com/newsite/scholar.htm for more info.

 ¤    Youth for Understanding National Scholarships

YFU will award up to 42 partial scholarships for students to study in the YFU Latin American country of their choice for a summer, semester or year program.  Awards range from $700-$2800 and open to 9-12 graders.  Applications are available on our website at www.yfu-usa.org.

¤    Grandmother's for Peace International

Available to high school seniors.  Write a brief autobiography of your activities relating to peace and social justice.  $250 and $500 scholarships will be awarded.  Go to www.grandmothersforpeace.org/scholarships/index.html for the application.

¤    Vocational-Technical Scholarship

For seniors interested in a Vo-Tech school.  $500 scholarships will be awarded.  Apply online at www.straightforwardmedia.com/votech.  The scholarship is awarded four times a year with the most current having a

 ¤    The Sikh Coalition Scholarship

An 1,000-1,500 word essay competition focusing on examining issues that confront our societies in the post Sept. 11 world.  Open to all students ages 14-19.  Three scholarships ranging from $250 - $1000 will be awarded. Go to www.sikhcoalition.org/essay.asp for the application and details. 

 ¤    Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Contest

An adult (21 years+) must nominate a student age 16-18 who have been extremely active in community service.  ¤    ANTHEM Essay Contest

Essay contest for 9th and 10th graders based on the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand.  Over 200 $30-$2,000 scholarships will be awarded.  Go to www.aynrand.org/site/PageServer?pagename=education_contests_anthem for more information. 

¤    Scholarships for Military Children

Full-time students under the age of 23 who are unmarried dependents of active or retired military personnel are eligible.  Must be at least a high school senior.  $1500 awards.  Go to www.militaryscholar.org for more information. 

Dimensions in Education Today: Live Poets Society

All U.S. high school students are eligible to enter up until March 31st of their senior year. Poems must be unpublished and 20 lines or less. Scholarships range from $100 to $1,000. Go to www.geocities.com/diet-lps/contestrules

10 X Media National Writing Contest

Students 16 years and older are eligible to apply. Must write three articles on one of the following topics: general real estate, city specific real estate, or personal finance. Scholarships ranging from $250-$2500. Go to http://10xmedia.com/2006writingcontest/  

Wendy's High School Heisman

All male and female athletes who exhibit excellence in the classroom, on the playing field, and within their communities need apply.  If you have at least a B average and participate in at least one sport you are eligible to apply.  There will be one male and one female winner from each school.  You have the potential of going on to wine $10,000. MS Chapter of the Financial Planning Association

Program provides two separate scholarships of $500 each to two seniors.  Applicants must have an ACT of 18 or higher and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

2007 SAE Engineering Scholarships

Sponsored by the society of Automotive Engineers.  For seniors intending to earn a degree in engineering or a related science.  Values range from $1,000 to $10,000 at various colleges.  Some are universtiy sponsored' some are undesignated (can be used at any school).  www.sae.org ( at the home site do a search for "Scholarships")

 ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Scholarships

College Steps Program Scholarships Sweepstakes

AXA Achievement scholarship

National Wild Turkey Federation Scholarship

Seniors with a 3.0 GPA who actively participate in hunting sports. An essay, an autobiography, and three letters of recommendation are required. Also, you must be a member of "Jakes" (cost is only $5.00). Go online if you are interested in becoming a member. Applications are available in the counseling office. Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries Scholarship Program

Requires a student of good sanding who has access to 1 acre of property of a pond 1 acre in size in Mississippi. The student must submit a registration form and written wildlife and/or fisheries in Mississippi. 15 students will be selected based on application, to recieve up to 1,000 in grant money to implement their management plan. Later the recipient will be invited to MSU to compete for Scholarships. 5 scholarships will be awarded, ranging from $500-$4,000. Deadline is November 1, 2007.

Education Services Foundation Scholarship

Fifty $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in Mississippi.  Applicants will write a 500 (maximum) word essay on a "special topic."  The topic should be available on the website by September or October.  www.esfweb.com/esf_scholarships.html

Ole Miss Lucky Day Scholarship

You must apply for a admissions and scholarships to Ole Miss by February 1st, have a 20 on your ACT and turn in a completed FAFSA from by February 15th.  Even if your parents are paying for your college and you know you will not be receiving financial aid from FAFSA, the completed form is required for this scholarship.  You could receive up to $7,000 a semester!!!

Outstanding Students of America

Various scholarship programs available for high school seniors.  Scholarships payable to the college of the students' choice.  Scholarship applications may be obtained from from the website.  Deadline is October 10th.  www.outstandingstudentsofamerica.com

Robert C. Byrd Scholarship

Byrd scholars must complete an application which includes a one page written essay.  Awards range from $1,100 to $1,500 each year.
